Organic Cotton: Inspiration & free knitting patterns

Ours Organic Cotton is a real versatile cotton yarn, you can use for far more than you think. It works just fine light summer tops and tees, baby knitting and all the practical things for everyday life such as dishcloths, kitchen towels and small accessories. Cotton gives a nice, clean mask image and feels comfortable against the skin - and Organic Cotton is precisely that quality stays really nice after washing, both when applicable softness and colors. This makes it an obvious "basic yarn" to have lying around when you want to knit something that will be used again and again.

Briefly about the yarn

  • Material: 100% organic cotton

  • Running length: approx. 50 g / 165 m

  • Recommended stick: 3–3.5 mm

  • Indicative knitting tenacity: approx. 24–26 m per 10 cm

  • Washing: We recommend 40° for clothes and 60° dishcloths/towels

Recipe: Sidewalk Top (Spectacle Knit) in two threads Organic Cotton (fv. 3820)

Recipe: Camisole no. 4 (My Favorite Things Knitwear) in 1 thread Organic Cotton (fv. 5209)

What can you knit in Organic Cotton?

Summer clothes

  • Summer tops and tees (stockinette, rib, structure)

  • Light cardigan/bolero for cool evenings

  • Summer dresses

Accessories

  • Thug hat
  • Net bag/market bag
  • Key ring/"back charm" in i-cord
  • Small makeup pads (reusable pads)

Baby & children

  • Small blouses/cardigans, bloomers, kisses and blankets

  • Dummy cord holder/clip cover (the cord itself must of course be approved - but the "cover" can be knitted)

  • Small bibs/bandana bibs

  •  Washcloths and bath gloves

  • Sun hat/bully hat (solid structure keeps the shape)

Cotton is brilliant for baby because it is soft and easy to wash (and delicious without being "fluffed" like some fibers can).

Kitchen & home

  • Dish cloths, kitchen towels, pot holders

  • Small bags/cases, wash cloths and "spa" cloths

  • Cushion cover in structure (e.g. pearl, rib, woven knit)

Below you will find 4 simple free recipes for two different dish cloths, a guest towel and reusable rondels.

1) Classic tea towel in pearl knit (keeps its shape nicely)

Size: approx. 24 x 24 cm
Sticks: 3.5 mm
Yarn: 50 g Organic Cotton

Cast on 61 stitches on needles 3.5 mm. Knit 3 rows.

Row 1: Knit 3, *1 knit, 1 purl* until there are 3 sts left, knit 3.

Stick 2: Knit 3, *1 purl, 1 knit* until there are 3 sts left, knit 3.

2) Waffle cloth (easy structure with good "grip")

Size: approx. 25 x 25 cm
Sticks: 3.5 mm
Pattern: Waffle
Yarn: 50 g Organic Cotton

Cast on 60 sts on needles 3.5 mm.

Block 1:

Row 1 (RS): K2, *3 knit, 3 purl* until there are 2 sts left, K2

Row 2 (VS): Knit 2, knit stitches as shown, knit 2

3) Kitchen towel in 2x2 rib with hanger

Size: approx. 32–35 cm wide and 50–60 cm long (adjust as you like)
Sticks: 3.5 mm
Pattern: Rib (2x2)
Yarn: 100 g Organic Cotton

Cast on 92 sts on needles 3.5 mm.

Pin 1 (RS): Knit 2, purl 2 stick out

Row 2 (VS): Knit as the stitches show

Continue until the towel measures approx. 45–55 cm. Finish with a purl. Close not off yet.

Suspension strap (in the corner):

On the right side: Knit to the last 10 sts. Cast off the next 6 sts. Knit the last 4 sts.

Next row: Knit to the hole, cast on 6 new sts (loop cast), finish the row.

Knit 8–10 more rows of rib.

Close loosely (possibly with an elastic closure if you want an extra flexible edge).

4) Reusable rondels/makeup pads

A perfect little leftover yarn project - and really obvious as a gift or "extra" in the basket.

Sticks: 3 mm
Yarn: a small remnant of Organic Cotton

Withdrawal: Knit in front and back joints (KFB).

  1. Knit the mask right as usual, but leave the stitch on the left needle.
  2. Insert the right stick back leg of same mask (ie from the back) and knit it right again.
  3. Now you can let the stitch slip off the left needle.
